Safety Storage of Lithium Ion Batteries and Test Rooms for Lithium Batteries

lithium ion batteries based energy storage devices offer high performance with a compact design.

These advantages mean they are being increasingly used in applications such as mobile, electronically operated devices, or vehicles. Alongside these advantages, this technology also poses safety risks. In particular, there is an increased risk of fire and bursting. As yet, there is no unified legislation on accident prevention. Safety measures need to be taken depending on the individual case to avoid and limit damage and to guarantee insurance cover. This is where DENIOS can help. Whether you are storing or testing lithium energy storage devices, the fitting room solution is a DENIOS one.

Lithium-Ion Battery Hazards and the Importance of Proper Storage

Lithium-ion batteries are vital for powering a range of devices, from smartphones to electric vehicles. However, if they are not handled or stored properly, these batteries can pose significant risks. They are highly flammable and can overheat, potentially leading to thermal runaway, fires, or even explosions. Without appropriate storage solutions, businesses may face serious hazards, regulatory fines, and substantial property damage.

Improper storage of lithium-ion batteries can lead to dangerous situations, including fires and explosions caused by overcharging, physical damage, or excessive heat. A damaged battery may also release toxic gases, posing serious health risks. Failure to store batteries correctly can result in regulatory violations, which could lead to fines and legal consequences. Additionally, environmental damage from leaks or fires can harm nearby ecosystems.

Battery-related incidents can disrupt business operations, causing costly downtime and asset loss. To mitigate these risks, it is crucial to implement fire-rated lithium battery storage solutions, such as those offered by DENIOS, to ensure workplace safety and regulatory compliance.

Safe solutions for active and passive storage

  • Dangerous: Unattended storing and charging of batteries.

  • All-round protection: ION-LINE safety storage cabinets for your safety.

Frequent, sometimes weekly accidents and countless damages prove the unattended charging and storing of batteries, for example, overnight, poses significant risks and dangers. People were admitted to hospitals with smoke inhalation and burns—high property damages led to the financial ruin of companies and other organizations.

To maintain the insurance cover, managing directors or their equivalent must provide suitable storage and charging solutions for

lithium-ion batteries. They are responsible for:

  • 1.their employees and are obliged to comply with the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
  • 2. They are also personally liable if inadequate fire protection measures are taken. This includes damage to property, possible damage to neighbouring facilities and, if necessary, the costs for large-scale evacuation measures.

These are the sad and distressing consequences of improper storage and charging of batteries. Lithium-ion batteries pose major fire and eruption hazards.

Damaged batteries can, under certain circumstances, spontaneously ignite or become unstable and explode when heated. According to the ADR, lithium-ion batteries are classified as hazardous materials and, therefore, must be handled appropriately.

Requirements for the storage of hazardous materials by legislative bodies do not yet exist. The fact that numerous insurance companies and associations have included clear guidelines in their contracts shows the acute need for action.

According to insurers and associations, batteries of medium capacity must spatially or structurally (in a fire-resistant manner) be separated from other areas. Spatial separation by storing the defective batteries outdoors is only possible if there is a safety distance of 10 m surrounding the area.

In addition, you must take the manufacturer's instructions for storage into account.
