Correct storage of hazardous materials

It is commonly said that one drop of oil can contaminate up to 1,000 liters of water. In the case of contamination of water bodies, steep fines and/or imprisonment are common penalties. How do we stop contamination before it gets that far?

Every day, we are dealing with hazardous substances and are often unsure about what needs to be stored so that people and the environment are optimally protected.

Frequently Asked Questions

Reservoirs shall be impermeable to the stored liquids and consist of non-combustible building materials.

The material from which a collecting tank is made must be specially adapted for the stored liquids. For the storage of water-endangering, flammable substances, e.g. Oils and lacquers, steel trays are available, optionally galvanized or varnished.

For storing aggressive chemicals, e.g. Acids and caustics are made of stainless steel trays or plastic trapping trays. In doing so, orient yourself to the rule of thumb in which the package in which the fabric is delivered is delivered.

Depending on the intended use, the troughs must be able to withstand different requirements. Collection trays with integrated stackers are ideal for transport with the forklift truck on the factory floor. In addition, attention must be paid to the collecting volume.

The storage space must be suitable, i. That there must be permanent ventilation, explosion protection and structural fire protection.

In principle, a height of 500 mm must not be exceeded, since adequate ventilation is no longer ensured. If, however, a higher bath height is required, a technical ventilation can be used, for example.

A receptacle shall contain the contents of the largest receptacle or at least 10% of the quantity stored. If the storage of water-endangering substances is generally permissible in water protection areas, a collecting tank must in this case be able to absorb 100% of the total storage volume.
